I believe they should not be used to replace a bear can. I do pack food and clothes in them to keep things dry. Not a substitute for bear can.

Yes. I have had used these bags as floatable coolers for several hours kayaking. I put ice, and drinks inside, and after the ice melts, the water stays inside until you drain it out. I also use them on my kayak for a jacket, towel, and my dry shoes. They have been submerged, and the bags did not leak. I have 4 sets of the 3 packs for my family and me, and not one of them has failed in the field.
