In most situations, the 1 Watt transmission power is all you need. If the NOAA issues warning while this feature is turned On, the radio sounds an alert tone. You will then hear the emergency/weather broadcast.

Instant Channel 16/9/Triple Watch - Triple Watch mode monitors channels 16 and 9 for a signal while you listen to the currently selected channel. The marine radio checks channel 16 and 9 for activity every 2 seconds.

If I buy 3 of these radios can I talk and listen to others on the same channel - Recent FCC change makes it legal to talk from shore to a boat on the water. Must restrict oneself to marine related traffic.Effective January 2017, the use of portable VHF radio ashore is allowed, “so long as it is limited to enhancing the usefulness of marine VHF radios without negatively affecting maritime communications.” From BoatUS Magazine, April-May, 2017

Is this pair of radios? (2 radios for $89?) - Nope, it is a single radio. The two-way designation means it both receives and transmits, as apposed to, say, your car radio, which only receives.

Can I use this radio as a scanner to listen to great lake freighter radio traffic? - Yes, but if you only want to listen to voice traffic, a cheaper VHF, without DSC and GPS, will also work fine. Most are about $100 cheaper. This radio is suitable for recreational vessels involved in racing and coastal cruising.

Does this radio go back to channel 16 every time you turn it off and turn it back on???? - As channel 16 is for initial hailing, and emergency communications you should want it to turn on and be on 16
