It is a VERY heavy duty nylon material, kind of like what a good suitcase is made of. I cannot see it tearing/ripping or wearing out for years and years, unless you maybe dragged it on the blacktop or something similar. For more information you can go to the manufacturers website at www.polarbearcoolers.com. They have a lot of details about the coolers there. FYI...I LOVE this cooler. I use it for everything, even a carryon. I cannot say enough good things about this product!!
---
It's really not intended to fold up. I'm thinking you might ruin it if you try. We leave ours zipped shut when not in use and it's about the same size as a small suitcase (20" long, 13" high and about 10" wide). It's a great cooler. Just got back from Death Valley Nat'l Park. It holds ice all day long.
---
For a family picnic/zoo outing - I would try the 24pk. The 12pk is more of a 1-2 person use and the 24pk would be 2-4 people

It packs fairly flat, but you will have the overall length to contend with. It really isn't made to compact down into a small space. If you do order one, you'll see how it arrives.
