It provides 360 degrees of light and it is tall enough that it isn't blocked by the paddler. I wouldn't want to be on the water without it at night.
You should mount it in a location on your kayak where you can reach behind you and grab it. I like mine behind my seat a little ways. The pole is very flexible and allows you to grab it with one hand to pull it down and twist the light on. I believe the light used on the visicarbon is the same thing as a tektite mark III dive light. It is definitely submersible as it is actually a dive light...I believe it is actually rated up to 1000' depth.
You can always replace the bungee with another cord that you find more durable if the standard one does not suit your needs. I believe it is 1/8" bungee. Most issues with the cords in our experience are due to prolonged salt exposure or from getting caught on a sharp edge of a broken pole section, if you decide to stick with the original maybe invest in a desalinator spray if you use it in the salt a lot. Hope this helps some.
Yes it fits perfectly in a blackpak. Thats where I store mine.
