Can it mount on a vertical bulkhead?

this particular compass to an almost horizontal recessed mounting. The compass unit inside the bubble housing floats and moves to accommodate being tossed around by a wave, but I wouldn't think it would be able to move right if mounted vertically. You might try to contact Brunton to validate this opinion, though.

Can this compass be mounted in a hole you cut or is it necessary to have the molded surface behind it? What is the hole size required?

I’ve only installed this compass in kayaks that have the molded area specifically made for it. Basically, four screw holes was all that needed to be done. I can not see cutting a hole like you’re mentioning without ruining your boat.

Can this compass be used in a car

You can use it in the vehicle if you'd like, but Brunton makes the 58CE for automotive uses.
